Hitachi Energy plans a 300-person engineering hub in Madrid
Hitachi Energy says demand for electricity infrastructure is rising sharply as countries electrify and update their power networks.
The company recorded €34 billion in orders in 2025, three times its 2020 total, while its Spanish division had more than €700 million in orders.
Updating power networks accounts for about 75% of that division’s revenue.
The company says it cannot currently meet all the demand it receives.
It chose Madrid from 15 locations for a European operations hub, partly because of Spain’s infrastructure, economic stability and universities.
About 300 employees are expected to form the hub, providing engineering expertise for projects across Europe.
The move also diversifies the company’s talent base beyond its long-standing technology support centre in India.
Hitachi Energy plans to establish a European engineering hub in Madrid with 300 employees.
The hub is intended to provide expertise for electricity-grid planning and substation design across Europe.
The company says rising electrification demand is straining its ability to respond.
Madrid was selected after the company assessed 15 locations.
Hitachi Energy’s Spanish division has about 1,500 employees and two production centres.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
We do not have the capacity to meet all the demand coming our way. We are at a historic moment, which involves a shift from the fossil fuel economy to the electricity economy.
Scaling our capacity depends not only on multiplying orders, manufacturing centres or internal management to meet delivery deadlines. We also have to scale up human resources and specialised talent.
We are moving back from globalisation to regionalisation and have seen the need to complement and diversify our sources of talent and build critical mass to create robust teams capable of supporting unprecedented demand.
