Rwanda signs 10-year deal to host Formula 1 African Grand Prix

Formula 1 has signed a 10-year deal with Rwanda to bring the African Grand Prix back to the continent.

The race will be held on a planned circuit near Kigali, the Rwandan capital, about 40 kilometres south of the city.

The first race could take place in 2030 at the earliest, but its timing depends on when the new track is finished.

Formula 1 last raced in Africa at the 1993 South African Grand Prix.

Rwanda’s president, Paul Kagame, said the event would connect African fans with the sport and could support jobs, skills, tourism and business.

Formula 1 says the return will mean the championship races on every inhabited continent.

Further details, including the first race date, are still to come as the circuit is developed.
