China’s central bank sets out its exchange-rate policy position

China’s central bank published its first full explanation of its policy on the yuan’s exchange rate on October 8.

It says China uses a managed floating system, in which market supply and demand play the main role, with reference to a basket of currencies.

The bank says China does not deliberately weaken the yuan to gain an advantage in trade.

The statement comes amid international debate over whether the yuan is undervalued and whether China’s trade surplus contributes to global economic imbalances.

It says exchange rates are affected by many factors, including financial markets and investor expectations, not trade alone.

The bank argues that global imbalances require action by multiple countries, rather than being solved by a change in the yuan’s value.

China says it will continue to shift its growth model, expand domestic demand and remain open to international trade.
