Novak says higher shipping costs drove most of oil price rise

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said higher costs to transport oil accounted for most of a recent rise in oil prices.

He was speaking after OPEC and OPEC+ ministers met in Riyadh.

Novak said freight, transport and insurance costs had risen five to ten times on some routes.

He linked the increases to global risks, a shortage of vessels, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on civilian ships carrying oil or petroleum products.

Higher shipping costs can add to the price of oil.

Ministers agreed to monitor the situation together and work with international organizations to stabilize the market.

They also agreed to keep meeting and make joint decisions by consensus.
