Record cancels Lula–Flávio Bolsonaro debate after candidates fail to confirm

Brazilian broadcaster Record canceled a presidential debate between Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro.

It had been scheduled for October 11 during the election’s second round.

Record said the candidates’ schedules were incompatible, but did not say which one could not attend.

Lula’s campaign said he would take part, while Flávio’s allies did not confirm his attendance.

The cancellation follows a first round in which Lula and Flávio also did not attend a televised debate.

The first second-round debate is now scheduled for October 18 on TV Bandeirantes, with another debate planned by Globo for October 23.

These televised debates give voters a chance to hear the candidates discuss their positions before the vote.
