China’s universal life insurance premiums rise 8.4% in first eight months
Universal life insurance premiums in China rose 8.4% in the first eight months of 2026.
These policies combine insurance protection with an account that can earn a guaranteed minimum return and potentially more.
Experts say demand has grown as people seek safer places for savings and look for savings-focused insurance.
The rise came while overall premiums at life insurers were slightly lower than a year earlier.
China’s life insurers collected 497.3 billion yuan in universal life insurance premiums in the first eight months of 2026, up 8.4% from a year earlier.
The figures were released by the National Financial Regulatory Administration.
The growth came as total original premium income at life insurers fell 0.2% to 3.5719 trillion yuan.
Experts attributed rising demand for universal life insurance to savings needs, demand for safer investments and the products’ combination of guaranteed and variable returns.
