Mexico to restrict phones in basic schools from November 3

From November 3, schools in Mexico will restrict cellphone use throughout the day for students in early education, preschool, primary and secondary school.

The rule applies to public and private schools, including during breaks.

It allows exceptions for planned educational activities, emergencies, health needs, disability, accessibility and inclusion.

High schools will set their own rules through agreements within each school community.

The government says the change aims to reduce distractions and improve school life, and a national consultation found many education workers concerned about attention and device use.

Researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico say restricting phones may help students concentrate, but there is not enough evidence in Mexico to show it will directly improve learning.

They say learning also depends on teaching, school facilities, materials and teaching strategies.

The Education Ministry should work with universities to study the effects and adjust the policy if needed, while schools and students adapt to the new rules.
