Libyan authorities seize 400 kg of hashish near Tobruk

Authorities in eastern Libya seized about 400 kg of hashish at a house near the coastal city of Tobruk.

They valued the drugs at about 6 million dinars, or $934,000, and arrested suspects, whose number has not been confirmed.

Officials said the shipment had been smuggled across the border from Egypt and was meant for sale in Libya.

The detainees were from Libya and Egypt.

Libya has become a major route for drug trafficking as gangs take advantage of turmoil and conflict since the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi.

In a separate operation on the same day, a Libyan National Army brigade seized more than 1.3 million narcotic pills in Kufra after a firefight, in which three soldiers were injured.

Officials have not said what will happen next in either case.
