Strawberries are still being harvested in Alsace in October

Strawberries are still being picked and sold in Alsace, eastern France, in October, when the French season would normally be over.

The late fruit has surprised shoppers and a supermarket produce manager, who said she had never seen strawberries on sale on October 7 in 40 years of work.

The timing has been disrupted by climate change.

Hot, dry conditions also damaged Alsace’s fruit and vegetable crops over the summer, so the late harvest does not make up for those losses.

One strawberry grower said flowers that would usually appear in spring have come early, and he worries this could leave less potential for next year’s crop.

He hired three pickers for the unusual harvest.

He hopes the current production will not harm the next season.
