DigUp lets Mac users find files by describing their contents

DigUp is a free, open-source app for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 14 or later.

Instead of remembering a filename, users can describe what they want to find, such as a dog near water or a discussion about sleep.

It searches photos, documents, PDFs, audio and video, and can open a relevant page or jump to a moment in a recording.

The app also combines meaning-based search with exact-word matching, which can help find specific details such as an invoice number or error code.

Searches run locally on the Mac, and the developer says files stay there, with no account or telemetry required.

Users choose which folders to index, but the first indexing can take a while, especially for large media collections.

DigUp requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later, and the app downloads a model of about 865 MB to run its searches.
