Indonesia says it has deployed 60,000 personnel to fight fires causing haze

Smoke from fires in Indonesia has raised concern in Malaysia over public health.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on October 8 to discuss the haze.

Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir said he had explained the country’s response to Malaysia’s foreign minister.

Indonesia says it has sent more than 60,000 personnel and about 48 helicopters and aircraft to fight the fires, including through water bombing and weather modification.

Anwar said Malaysia was ready to cooperate and had increased cloud-seeding operations.

He also asked Malaysian ministers to contact their Indonesian counterparts and to seek an ASEAN meeting of environment ministers.

Nasir said the fires remain difficult to control, but he hopes coming rain will help ease the situation.
