A Singapore man grieves a dog he was taught not to love

Hafeez Hassan grew up fearing dogs in a Malay family in Singapore.

He later formed a close bond with his former partner’s husky, Pieces, and says he has been grieving that relationship.

Many Muslims in the region consider dogs’ saliva and waste ritually impure, though the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore says touching or holding a dog is not sinful.

The council noted that some other Islamic schools of thought have different views.
