Pac-12 returns with nine schools as college basketball conferences shift

The Pac-12 is returning to college basketball with nine schools: Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Oregon State, San Diego State, Texas State, Utah State and Washington State.

Several of them came from the Mountain West, which also kept UNLV, New Mexico and Nevada and added Grand Canyon.

Gonzaga’s inclusion is presented as important to giving the revived conference standing.

The Mountain West still has schools including UC Davis, San Jose State, Hawaii and Air Force.

Elsewhere, the Western Athletic Conference has been renamed the United Athletic Conference after adding former ASUN programs, leaving the ASUN with eight schools.

These changes are reshaping the group of conferences outside the high-major leagues.

The Pac-12 is aiming to send at least three teams to the NCAA tournament each year, though that is a goal, not a guarantee.
