French municipal social centers launch fund to attract private donations
France’s national network of municipal social centers is launching a fund to attract private donations.
The centers help residents facing hardship, and the network says public funding is no longer enough to meet rising demand.
Its 4,200 local branches also help communities respond to floods, heatwaves and other natural hazards, which affect 5,700 French municipalities each year.
The network says requests for help from people in work are growing, while more older people are struggling to afford heating or health care.
It also reports rising requests for housing and support for people experiencing psychological distress without care.
The new fund is intended to support people facing these forms of hardship and help the centers remain local sources of support.
The network has not said how much money it aims to raise or how the fund will distribute it.
The National Union of Communal Social Action Centres (UNCCAS) launched a fund on 12 October to attract private financing for local social services.
UNCCAS says public funding is no longer sufficient as requests for help increase and precariousness grows.
The fund aims to support residents facing the greatest hardship and address emerging forms of social vulnerability.
The network says its 4,200 local centres help communities respond to climate disasters, including floods and heatwaves.
An internal September 2026 study found that 63% of centres had seen increased requests for support from working people in poverty.
