Former Flipkart staff seek clarity on stock option liquidity and IPO

About 1,000 former employees of Flipkart and its group companies have asked the boards of Walmart and Flipkart for clarity on the company’s long-awaited IPO and access to the value of their vested stock options.

The former staff include people from Flipkart, Myntra, Cleartrip, Shopsy, Supermoney and ANS.

Flipkart is owned by Walmart, which is taking a cautious approach to a listing.

People familiar with the matter say the IPO could be delayed by another one to two years, but the timing remains unclear.

In a buyback in July, eligible employees could sell up to 5 per cent of their vested options, and Flipkart was valued at about $38.2 billion.

Former employees are asking what other ways they may be able to sell their shares and when.

The uncertainty matters because stock options can form a significant part of long-serving employees’ wealth and may affect whether some stay with the group.
