US corporate bond spreads narrowed as Treasury yields rose

US Treasury yields rose sharply in 2026, with the 10-year yield climbing from 3.96% in February to 5.31% on October 5.

Higher interest rates can raise companies’ borrowing costs and slow the economy, which could make it harder for them to repay debt.

Yet investment-grade corporate bond spreads narrowed slightly, falling from 86 basis points in February to 84 in September.

A spread is the extra yield investors demand to take on the risk that a company may not repay its debt.

Research has often found spreads narrow as Treasury yields rise, although the relationship can vary, and the riskiest CCC-rated and lower bonds saw spreads widen as borrowing costs increased.

One explanation is that rising yields can reflect a strong economy that supports company profits, or higher inflation that lets borrowers repay with less valuable dollars.

The direction of spreads depends partly on why yields rise, and the available information gives no specific forecast for what happens next.
