India’s oil-palm area grows, but production gains remain slower

India has expanded oil-palm cultivation from about 8,585 hectares in 1991–92 to about 6.43 lakh hectares by March 2026.

The National Mission on Edible Oils–Oil Palm, launched in 2021, helped accelerate planting and support for farmers.

Oil palm was unfamiliar to many farmers, so extension teams used demonstrations and explained the crop, its costs and available support.

The crop takes several years to produce significantly, so new plantations add to the area before they add much oil.

From 2021–22 to 2024–25, the area grew by nearly 50%, while annual crude palm oil production rose by about 5%.

This slower production growth does not by itself mean the expansion has failed, but it shows that planted area is not the same as productive area.

The article says success depends on suitable land, water, maintenance, farmer support and processing facilities.

Oil palm could help reduce India’s dependence on edible-oil imports, but the next priority is turning more plantations into healthy, productive farms.
