Manitoba to set age, helmet and speed rules for personal electric vehicles
Manitoba plans to bring new rules for personal electric vehicles into force in 2027.
They cover devices such as e-scooters, electric skateboards, e-unicycles and hoverboards.
Riders must be at least 16, and everyone on a device, including passengers, must wear a properly fitting helmet.
The devices cannot travel faster than 25 km/h or be used on sidewalks.
They can be used on pathways, bike lanes and roads where the posted speed limit is 50 km/h or lower, subject to local rules.
E-bikes are not covered by these new rules.
The province says the rules aim to reduce injuries and make shared roads safer; police and other peace officers can stop riders who break them.
The province is especially concerned about injuries to young people, and the new rules will also affect local bylaws such as those in Morden.
