Korean director Kim Sung-soo adopts AI as a filmmaking tool

Korean director Kim Sung-soo once thought artificial intelligence could damage the film industry, but now uses it in his work.

At a Busan film market session, he said a short film called “Worm Train” changed his view after AI technology improved enough to create a scene he had previously abandoned.

Kim worked with a nine-person team and chose to make only part of the short with AI.

He plans a similar mix of AI and conventional filmmaking for a seven-part drama series he is developing.

The series’ opening chase on the Gyeongin Expressway will first be generated with AI, helping the team decide which shots should use actors and traditional visual effects.

Other filmmakers at the session also said AI can speed up early design work, but that directors and skilled crews remain important.

Kim said the industry should settle rules on commercial use and permissions before setting technical standards.

The sources do not say when the drama series will be made.
