France has more than 4 million private-sector managers and professionals

In France, more than 4 million people work as private-sector cadres, a category that includes managers and specialist professionals.

Their numbers have grown more than fivefold since 1968, when they made up 7% of private-sector employees; by 2020, they were 23%.

Most cadres are now specialists rather than managers: 42% supervised other employees in 2020, down from 53% in 2006.

Women now make up 38% of cadres, while they account for 45% of non-cadres.

The group has expanded across industries, with particularly rapid growth in computing, where cadre numbers have risen tenfold since the early 1980s.

Cadres often have better pay and fewer physical risks at work, but older workers face higher unemployment than other groups and young people find it harder to enter the field.

Recruitment intentions have slowed, reaching their lowest level since 2020 at large companies amid economic uncertainty.
