US jet disables cargo ship in Gulf of Oman amid blockade

The US military says a US fighter jet hit the rear of the Panama-flagged cargo ship M/V Ocean Molica in the Gulf of Oman.

The strike disabled the ship’s engine, and the crew was not injured.

US Central Command said the ship had left an Iranian port and ignored repeated warnings to stop.

The United States is blocking ships from entering or leaving Iranian ports and coastal areas to limit Iran’s oil export income.

Iran has also blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy trade.

A separate tanker was attacked in the strait and caught fire, but its crew was reported safe.

Attacks on tankers have reduced ship traffic through the strait and raised concerns about shipping disruptions and higher oil prices.
