Deadly attack on Riyadh airport escalates Yemen fighting

A strike hit King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday, killing at least 12 people and injuring more than 300.

Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said the victims included passengers and airport staff.

The Saudi-led military coalition blamed Yemen’s Houthi group, but the Houthis have not claimed responsibility.

The Houthis warned airlines, airport workers and travellers against using Saudi airports and airspace.

Airport operations were suspended, flights were cancelled or diverted, and Riyadh schools moved to remote learning for a week.

The strike comes as fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces intensifies after a UN-brokered ceasefire largely in place since 2022 collapsed.

Saudi Arabia has vowed to retaliate, while fears are growing that the conflict could spread across the region.
