Maryland man convicted of stealing more than $53 million from crypto exchange

A court found Jonathan Spalletta guilty of stealing more than $53 million from the cryptocurrency exchange Uranium Finance.

He used flaws in the exchange’s software to take the money in two hacks in 2021.

The exchange later shut down, and authorities recovered about $31 million in cryptocurrency and seized collectibles bought with stolen funds.

The case shows how software weaknesses can cause major losses for people using online financial services.
