Tom Zé turns 90 with concerts, an exhibition and new music planned

Tom Zé, a musician from Bahia who has lived in São Paulo for more than 50 years, turns 90 on Sunday.

His milestone is being marked with an exhibition in São Paulo, a new biography and concerts in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Florianópolis.

A recording of a concert from 30 years ago is also due to be released, along with an album of new songs.

One track from the new album, “Futuro Fruto,” has already been released.

Tom Zé’s songs have often examined city life, including consumerism, pollution and social injustice.

He was arrested twice during the military regime, a period that remains part of his personal history.

He says he has moved past a period when he was overlooked, though he does not discuss that experience in detail here.
