NHK’s ‘Company Employee’ opens with a tense office-suspense story

NHK’s new drama “Company Employee” began with an office-suspense story about pressure and conscience at work.

It is the second production from NHK’s Writers’ Development Room, a team project launched in 2022 to develop original drama scripts.

The story follows 50-year-old executive hopeful Eriko Miyaki, played by Yoshida, at a major company.

A subordinate tells her he can no longer tolerate the behavior of a senior colleague, and Eriko reports the complaint to a managing director before choosing what she believes is the best response.

An unexpected threat then targets Eriko, turning her decision into a source of further tension.

Viewers described the episode as unsettling and stressful, and noted its stark contrast with “Danchi no Futari,” the drama shown the week before.

The first episode raises questions about what it means to work within an organization and where a person’s conscience lies.
