19-year-old woman shot dead in Taboão da Serra; ex-partner sought

Ana Clara Soares de Oliveira, 19, was shot dead early Monday in Taboão da Serra, near São Paulo, Brazil.

Her former partner, 22-year-old Mateus Isaac Cardoso Silva, is the main suspect, and police are searching for him.

Police are investigating the killing as femicide, a term used in Brazil for the killing of a woman in a context of gender-based violence.

Family members told police that Ana Clara had faced abuse and threats during the relationship.

They said she had moved to another neighborhood for safety.

Police say the suspect fled on a motorcycle and are also looking for the gun used in the shooting.

Ana Clara is due to be buried in Taboão da Serra on Tuesday, while investigators examine evidence including her phone and nearby security-camera footage.
