Nunes sees Sidney Cruz as stronger candidate to succeed him in 2028

São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes sees former housing secretary Sidney Cruz as a possible successor in the city’s 2028 mayoral election.

Cruz was elected to Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies in the October 4 election, winning 130,951 votes.

Nunes told allies that Cruz’s election has strengthened his chances of becoming the mayor’s chosen successor.

Cruz campaigned alongside Nunes’s wife, Regina Nunes, who was elected to the state legislature.

Other possible candidates include city officials Fabrício Cobra and Pedro Fernandes, but neither has run for elected office.

Cruz has built his own electoral support through campaigns for city council in 2020 and 2024.

Another city official, Edson Aparecido, was consulted by Nunes but showed no interest in running for mayor.
