Chenpi citrus project links growers in Guangdong to processing and sales
In Paitou village in Bluekou town, Dongyuan county, Guangdong, growers cultivate chenpi citrus, a type of citrus used to make dried peel products.
The area has about 6,000 mu of these citrus groves, with a potential annual harvest of nearly 24 million kilograms when the trees are in full production.
For years, many growers sold fresh fruit on their own, with limited processing and low returns.
A local agricultural company has set up the Bluekou Chenpi Workshop to connect growing, harvesting, processing, storage and sales.
It has developed more than 10 products and buys fruit from growers, including one farmer whose 15,000-kilogram harvest was bought after he struggled to sell it.
The project has leased land from more than 80 households and provides wages and other income opportunities, including seasonal work for dozens of villagers.
The company says the approach is intended to raise local incomes, while turning more of the citrus harvest into products with added value.
A processing project in Guangdong’s Lankou town is linking citrus growers to processing, storage and sales.
The project, run by an ecological agriculture company in Dongyuan County, aims to raise the value of chenpi citrus products.
Lankou’s villages have about 6,000 mu of chenpi citrus, with mature orchards capable of producing nearly 24 million kilograms a year.
The project has leased 400 mu of farmers’ land and benefited more than 80 households.
It has developed more than 10 products and buys growers’ fruit, while employing local residents during busy periods.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
I grew up in the countryside and have always believed that agriculture can bring prosperity, and that we must help villagers prosper together.
In the past, we could only wait for buyers to come, and prices were low and the fruit was hard to sell; now, with the chenpi workshop, the fruit is easy to sell and income is assured, so farming has more promise.

The project expanded its planting area.
The workshop bought 15,000 kilograms of fresh fruit from grower Zou Riming after he faced difficulty selling it.
