Storms fueled by Hurricane Simon threaten six US states
Moisture from Hurricane Simon is expected to help fuel severe thunderstorms across parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois through Thursday.
Simon was a Category 2 hurricane off Mexico’s Pacific coast on Monday and was forecast to approach Mexico’s west-central coast before weakening inland.
A weather system moving east from the Southwest and a cold front crossing Kansas will help draw warm, humid air into the storm area.
The greatest early risk is in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, central Kansas and the lower Missouri Valley.
Forecasters say storms could bring a few tornadoes, golf-ball-sized hail, damaging winds and heavy rain.
Repeated downpours could cause flash flooding, with some parts of Oklahoma forecast to receive 2 to 5 inches of rain, though the location is uncertain.
Storms are expected to develop Tuesday afternoon and evening, with further rounds possible into Wednesday and Thursday.
