US prosecutor says Chinese espionage is widespread
Bill Essayli, a senior federal prosecutor in Los Angeles, says Chinese espionage is widespread in the United States.
His comments followed the arrest of Wanying Zhang, 34, of Irvine, California.
Prosecutors say Zhang worked with an associate to photograph and record a family member of Taiwan’s president near the family’s home in the Seattle area.
They allege she made the trip at the direction of Chinese officials and sent them photos, videos and license plate details.
Zhang was arrested at a Los Angeles airport while trying to board a flight to China, and faces a federal charge of acting as an unregistered agent of China.
Essayli also cited other cases his office has brought involving alleged Chinese activity, including technology sales and a former local mayor accused of spreading propaganda.
He says the FBI is investigating and his office will support investigations and bring charges.
