SNL UK Can Use Stronger Language Than the US Original
Saturday Night Live UK is a British version of the American sketch-comedy show.
It airs at 10 p.m., after the UK television watershed begins.
UK rules say the strongest language cannot be broadcast before 9 p.m., and offensive language must be justified by context.
This gives the late-night British show more room to use swear words than the American original has on network television.
The British version has used that freedom sparingly since it launched.
The question is whether stronger language makes its sketches funnier or simply provides an easy punchline.
The show’s writers will need to weigh the effect of language against the joke they are trying to make.
