MLB teams may get 2027 draft picks for free agents who reject qualifying offers

MLB teams may get 2027 draft picks for free agents who reject qualifying offers

MLB teams can offer certain free agents a one-year contract worth $23.15 million for the 2027 season.

A player who accepts stays with that team instead of entering free agency.

A player who rejects the offer can seek a contract with another club, and the former team may then receive a draft pick.

For teams that receive revenue-sharing money, the pick comes after the first round if the player signs elsewhere for more than $50 million in guaranteed money.

If the deal is worth less than $50 million, the pick comes between Competitive Balance Round B and the start of the third round.

MLB is expected to confirm teams’ categories in early December, so the final list is not yet known.

The current collective bargaining agreement ends on December 1, and the qualifying-offer system may change or end after that.
