Revenue-sharing teams would give up a 2027 draft pick to sign a qualified free agent

Revenue-sharing teams would give up a 2027 draft pick to sign a qualified free agent

A qualifying offer is a one-year contract offer that a team can make to certain players whose contracts are ending.

This winter, the offer is worth $23.15 million.

A player who rejects it can become a free agent and sign with another team.

If one of the 15 revenue-sharing teams signs such a player from another team, it would give up its third-highest selection in the 2027 draft.

A team can re-sign its own player without this penalty.

The draft pick a team must surrender may not be its third-round pick, because some of these clubs also receive extra selections in special draft rounds.

MLB is expected to confirm the final team categories in early December.
