Dutch central bank president again calls for ending mortgage tax relief

Olaf Sleijpen, president of De Nederlandsche Bank, has again called for ending the Netherlands’ mortgage interest tax relief.

He spoke on Friday at an event at the University of Amsterdam.

The tax relief allows homeowners to deduct mortgage interest from their taxable income.

Sleijpen says it gives homeowners an advantage over renters.

He has also argued that it pushes up house prices.

He believes ending the relief is sensible even as the housing market cools.

The statements do not say whether the government plans to act or when any change might happen.
