AK Party deputy says members involved in wrongdoing were removed

Ahmet Büyükgümüş, a deputy leader of Turkey’s AK Party, spoke at a party meeting in Armutlu, in Yalova province.

He said the party’s goal was to serve the public and pursue its vision of a strong Turkey, not simply to gain political offices.

He said members who had done wrong in the past, and others involved in similar conduct more recently, had been removed or had their party roles ended.

Büyükgümüş said courts and investigators were pursuing their own processes.

He also accused opposition politicians of failing to investigate alleged misconduct in their own party, while making accusations against the AK Party.

The remarks came as he called for accountability from anyone who broke the law or harmed public resources.

He said the party would continue its work and would not allow false claims to divide it from the public.
