Lupi says Milan’s centre-right must stay united over mayoral candidate

Maurizio Lupi, leader of the small centre-right party Noi moderati, says the coalition must remain united as it chooses a candidate for mayor of Milan.

The coalition has not yet agreed on a candidate.

The League has called for primaries, in which voters choose between candidates, but Lupi says they are not part of the coalition’s usual approach.

He describes primaries as a last resort and says he does not think they will be needed.

Lupi says party leaders should weigh the different names being proposed rather than become entrenched in their own choices.

He says the coalition will set criteria and find a solution by autumn.

The choice matters because the centre-right wants to regain control of Milan’s city government.

What people are saying

It is unthinkable that the unity of the centre-right, which is a value for our coalition, should be broken, and in Milan of all places.

The primaries are not part of our DNA. They would be the last resort, but I do not think we will get to that.

I am confident: we leaders will find a compromise.
