Wadden Sea centre faces bankruptcy after public funding offer withdrawn
The Wadden Sea centre in Lauwersoog includes a seal rescue centre and an exhibition about the Wadden Sea.
The municipality of Het Hogeland and Groningen province have said they will not help keep the organisation financially afloat.
The centre opened at its new site in 2025 and has since faced serious financial problems.
Its debt is reported to be €2.6 million, after costs and disputes linked to the construction of a building costing about €43 million.
The directors will spend the next two weeks looking for a final rescue plan; if that fails, they intend to apply for bankruptcy.
The director says bankruptcy would end the seal rescue service, and the centre says 40 people could lose their jobs.
Contractors who are owed money have expressed anger and disappointment over the situation.
