AfD youth official posts map claiming German-speaking areas beyond Germany
Luca Maurice Strauf, an official in the youth organization of Germany’s far-right AfD party, posted a map on X on October 3.
The map showed a proposed “Greater Germany” that included German-speaking Switzerland, Austria, Alsace and Lorraine, Luxembourg, South Tyrol and areas in several other countries.
Strauf wrote that German unity meant bringing the entire German people together in one state, and described German reunification as a step toward that goal.
He later deleted the post.
Historian Olivier Meuwly says the idea draws on a 19th-century view of the nation as a shared cultural and language group.
That view differs from the idea that belonging should depend on support for democratic principles, and the map also echoes territorial ambitions associated with Nazi Germany.
The post was published on the anniversary of German reunification, but no further action is described.
