Tooth loss linked to higher risk of cognitive decline in older adults

A review of 14 studies found that older adults who had lost more than one tooth had nearly 50% higher risk of cognitive decline.

The same group had 28% higher odds of receiving a dementia diagnosis.

The review, published in the journal JAMDA, examined links between tooth loss and brain health in older adults.

It does not show that losing teeth causes cognitive decline or dementia.

Other factors may also play a role, including long-term inflammation, diet, access to dental care and existing illnesses.

Gum disease can progress and lead to tooth loss, so regular dental checkups and daily oral hygiene can help prevent problems in the mouth.

The guidance recommends a dental visit every six months for an examination and cleaning, with X-rays when needed.
