Two arrested in investigation into child sexual exploitation network in Rio

Police arrested two people in an investigation into a suspected child sexual exploitation network in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The man, arrested in the Gávea neighborhood, is alleged to have helped recruit victims and organize the group; a woman was arrested in Nova Iguaçu.

Investigators say the group used messaging apps to offer children and teenagers of both sexes in exchange for money or benefits such as phones.

Police are also investigating parties where sexual abuse may have taken place, including alleged cases involving babies as young as five months.

The arrests are part of the second phase of an investigation that began with a lawyer as a target and later identified other suspects.

The crimes under investigation include rape of a vulnerable person, facilitating prostitution and producing child sexual abuse material.

Police are continuing to search for other suspects and are trying to identify people who may have used the network’s services.
