Thailand steps up flood response ahead of IMF-World Bank meetings in Bangkok

Thailand is speeding up flood response and recovery as Bangkok prepares to host the IMF-World Bank annual meetings from Oct.

12 to 18.

Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told agencies to assess risks, clean affected areas and document damage so residents can receive assistance.

About 20,000 people from 190 countries are expected to attend the meetings, with the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre as the main venue.

Officials must warn communities before releasing water and prepare evacuation plans, especially for older people, bedridden patients and others who need help moving.

More rain is expected, so authorities are also checking supplies and equipment that could be sent to areas hit by flooding.

Relief payments have reached 48,600 households, about 12% of the number currently expected to qualify.

Officials are to continue aid and recovery work while monitoring conditions and preparing for further rain.
