US public EV charging network expands despite falling electric car sales
Electric vehicles make up a smaller share of new car sales in the United States than they did at their peak last year, with their share now about half as large.
Even so, companies are continuing to add public charging stations.
They say more chargers are needed for current drivers and people buying used electric cars.
By early October this year, more than 12,000 charging plugs had been added at about 2,000 sites.
Last year, nearly 20,000 plugs were installed at 3,885 sites.
The industry expects this year's total installations to be similar to last year's record.
The United States now has more than 80,000 public fast-charging plugs.
High upfront costs and weaker electric car sales mean charging companies are still struggling to become profitable.
