Spain approves tax-favoured investment account with a €150,000 limit
Spain’s government has approved a new investment account for individual savers who want to invest in European businesses.
Each person can hold one account, with up to €150,000 invested in shares, funds and other eligible assets.
At least 70% of the portfolio must be linked to the European Economic Area, and it must meet additional minimums for shares.
Investors can buy and sell within the account without paying income tax on those transactions while they keep the account for at least five years.
When money is withdrawn, gains of up to €10,000 are tax-free; gains above that amount receive a 20% tax allowance.
The government says the account is intended to encourage long-term investing and move some Spanish savings out of bank deposits and into European businesses.
Banks and investment firms may offer it, but it cannot be sold until the required ministerial orders take effect and the relevant parliamentary validation is completed.
