Panama begins recovery after 7.7-magnitude earthquake

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck southern Panama around midday on Oct.

9, with its epicentre near the borders of Herrera, Los Santos and Veraguas provinces.

Residents in Herrera province began clearing damaged homes and businesses the next day, while many slept outdoors or in a school because they feared more shaking.

More than 100 aftershocks followed, some reaching magnitude 6.0.

No deaths have been reported, but about 30 people received treatment for minor injuries, and officials are still assessing damage in remote areas.

Dozens of homes were damaged in Chitre, where residents were still without electricity on Oct.

10, and damaged roads cut off several communities.

Earthquakes are rare in Panama, where they usually occur in the western province of Chiriqui.

The government declared a state of emergency to speed up the management of up to US$100 million in humanitarian aid, and the United States pledged support.
