Jordan Nassar Uses Palestinian Embroidery to Imagine Landscapes

Jordan Nassar, a New York-born artist of Palestinian and Polish heritage, is showing new works at No 9 Cork Street in London.

The exhibition is presented by Dubai gallery The Third Line and is his first in the UK in a decade.

Nassar uses tatreez, a Palestinian cross-stitch embroidery, to make imagined landscapes.

He describes them as versions of Palestine held in the minds of people in the diaspora, shaped by stories and imagination.

The works combine colourful mountains and skies with the repeated geometric patterns of embroidery.

Nassar says his interest in Palestinian identity comes partly from growing up in New York; his grandfather migrated to the United States before the Nakba and helped establish an Arab American community in Yonkers.

The exhibition presents these dreamlike landscapes as a way to explore identity, family history and belonging.
