Italian writer Giampaolo Spinato builds an independent path for his books

Giampaolo Spinato is an Italian writer, journalist and university teacher who has published novels with major houses including Einaudi, Mondadori and Fazi.

In 2014, he began self-publishing, choosing a different way to bring his books to readers rather than returning to a traditional publishing process he no longer found convincing.

His latest self-published novel, Ferità, came out on July 13, 2026.

Spinato handled its editing himself and uses digital tools and artificial intelligence to help with promotion, while keeping the writing and publishing decisions in his own hands.

The book has sold several dozen copies so far, and early readers have led to reviews, new contacts and invitations to public events.

His earlier self-published books sold about 300 to 350 copies and about 150 copies, respectively.

Spinato is now working to reach readers beyond Amazon through independent bookstores and other networks.

His experience shows that a self-published book can find readers, though on a smaller scale than industrial publishing.
