Sudan church was built around an older carving of a possible Kushite ruler

In northern Sudan, researchers have studied a life-size carving at Miseeda that may show a ruler from the ancient Kingdom of Kush.

A Christian church was built around the carving in the seventh century, suggesting the place remained important over a long period.

The carving shows a standing man holding a spear and two rams.

Miseeda is near the Third Cataract of the Nile, a transition zone between areas to the north often under Egyptian control and lands farther south.

Researchers say the carving may have marked a borderland, but its exact age has not been established.

A Polish research team also recorded nearly 300 archaeological sites in the surrounding area.

Further work is needed to date the carving more precisely.
