São Paulo renews heavy rain alert through Thursday

São Paulo’s Civil Defense agency renewed a heavy rain alert for the state from Tuesday through Thursday.

Rain is forecast across all regions, with lightning, strong winds and a chance of severe storms or isolated hail.

The heaviest rain is expected in western and southern areas on Tuesday, with widespread rain forecast Wednesday and showers continuing Thursday.

Days of rain have left the ground saturated, raising the risk of flooding, fast-moving water and rising rivers and streams, especially in vulnerable areas.

A cold front moving in from the ocean, along with a weather system known as a trough, is driving the unsettled conditions.

Residents are advised to avoid flooded roads and areas near rivers during heavy rain, and to seek safe shelter if they notice signs of a possible landslide.

The alert covers the period through Thursday, when showers are expected to persist across the state.
