Tips Music chief challenges Vashu Bhagnani’s song-rights lawsuit
Producer Vashu Bhagnani’s company, Pooja Films, sued music label Tips Music over the use of two songs from the 1999 film Biwi No.
1 in a newer film.
Tips Music chief Kumar Taurani says the songs, “Chunari Chunari” and “Ishq Sona Hai”, were used without permission.
Taurani says the contracts between the companies specify Mumbai as the place for legal disputes.
He criticised Bhagnani for filing cases in courts in Bihar, far from Mumbai.
Taurani says two high courts and the Supreme Court gave Tips Music relief and directed Bhagnani to pursue the dispute in Mumbai.
The disagreement is notable because the companies had worked together on films and music for many years.
Taurani also says Bhagnani had previously made a deal with Tips Music to use two songs from the 1995 film Coolie No.
1 in its 2020 remake.
Tips Music chairman and managing director Kumar Taurani has challenged producer Vashu Bhagnani’s lawsuit over the alleged unauthorized use of songs from Biwi No. 1.
Taurani says Tips Music contracts make Mumbai the jurisdiction for disputes and that courts have directed Bhagnani to pursue the case there.
Bhagnani’s production house, Pooja Films, sued Tips Music over the use of “Chunari Chunari” and “Ishq Sona Hai” in Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai.
Taurani says the songs’ rights were sold to Tips Music and points to a deal in which Bhagnani licensed two Coolie No. 1 songs for a remake.
Taurani says the lawsuit has created distance between the two men, who had worked together on films for years.

What people are saying
Whatever case you file, you can file it only in Mumbai.
Thankfully, we got proper relief from both high courts and the Supreme Court.
If he had a grudge, he should’ve come to us directly.
Now, he’s forgotten he had sold his rights to us.
