Guardians rally past Rays 7-3 in ALCS opener

The Cleveland Guardians beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-3 in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Foster Griffin, who played for Japan’s Yomiuri Giants for three seasons before returning to Major League Baseball, made his first postseason start for Cleveland.

He gave up two runs in the first inning but settled down to allow no more runs over four innings.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt praised Griffin for recovering after a difficult start.

Cleveland’s bats then turned the game around: solo home runs in the sixth and seventh innings tied the score.

In the eighth, Josh Lowe hit a two-run single to put the Guardians ahead, and they added three more runs in the ninth.

Cleveland leads the best-of-seven series 1-0 and is seeking its first World Series appearance in 10 years.
